Coaxing the Soul
of America Back to Life How the New Deal Sustained, and Was Sustained by Artists:

"One hundred years from now my administration will be
known for it's art, not for it's relief."

In the depths of the Great Depression, American artists received their own version of a stimulus package from the federal government. From December 1933 to June 1934, the Public Works of Art Program put to work 3,749 artists (many of whom were hurting, just like their neighbors) to create more than 15,000 murals, paintings and other artworks for post offices, schools, libraries and government buildings. They were intended to lift the spirits of a demoralized nation through depictions of "the American scene."

  1. I choose the pictuere of a little girl who looks sad and is holding a stuffed animal. This picture reveals allot about how hard the great depression really was, espically on kids. I choose the picture because the girl in the picture looks very sad. Maybe she had a rough day but it was like that for everyone during the Great Depression. This piece tells the stroy that the Great Depression had a great inpact on not only Adults but kids to. The Great Depression stole money from people. That effect kids because it takes food out of their mouthes and toys away from them. This girl could have been sad for a number of reasons but my guess is beacuse she couldnt get anything she wanted, she was hungray; and her parents werent home as muchbecause they had to work extra time.

  2. I choose the picture of two mountain loins on a ridge over looking a forest. This picture really speaks out about the unknown beauty that animals see in the wild that we don't see because we had "other things" to worry about during the Depression. It's story says that, though there is suffering in the world there is hope and beauty as well. In order to find it, however, you must travel away from that sorrow to truly appreciate it. We humans were suffering, animals, like the mountain lion were not, they were living out their lives normally, because they did nothing to change it. WE crashed the stock market, but the natural beauty of the wild remained untouched.
We could all learn from that sereneness that all should remain as it is.

  3. I chose the picture of the old woman sitting in the kitchen on the chair. This picture shows that the Great Depression had a big impact on people and changed everything. The old woman couldn't eat anything because she didn't have any money to buy food. She might've lived with her family, and they had to go to look for jobs or go to work if they even had a job, so she was very lonely and sad all the time. This picture is a very appealing picture because you can see everything in the picture especially the woman's facial expressions which show the feeling people had during the Great Depression.

  4. I chose the picture of the man in the cave mining for gold. He is sweating and he is using both his arms and his legs to drill through the rock. I chose this because this man is in a cave drilling for gold and people during the depression looked for anything that could get them money. This painting represents how hard people were willing to work to get money during the Great Depression

  5. I chose the picture called "Filling the ice house". the picture made me think about how hard it was during the Great Depression. It stood out to me over all the other pictures because the people in the picture look so upset about the Great Depression and the mood is very sad. This picture tells a story and they story it is trying to tell that even though the economy was going through a hard time, many people were able to pull through it by working. The Great Deression had many effects on out nation. One effect was that many people were unemployed and had just enough money to have a little dinner on their families table. This was one painting that ment something big about the Great Depression

  6. I chose the baseball picture with the baseball players playing at night. I chose this picture because it reminded me of a good sport that would take the people's mind off of the Great Depression and their tough times. It appeals to me because I play baseball and it reduces my stress when I play. The story it tells is that the men playing are enjoying themselves and getting away from the daily worries of the Great Depression. My reflection at this piece is that by watching and playing baseball it gets your mind off of losing your home, having no job and money. This all helped in the Great Depression Era and the effect it had on our nation!

  7. I choose this picture because it told a story to me as soon as I saw it. The look of the lonely beaten up farm reminded me of the great depression which I thought to be very interesting. This piece tells the story of a once working farm that was nourished with food. But when the great depression hit the family lost all their business. No one could afford the freshest food. Therefore the family lost there way of income. This piece is a great reflection on the effects of the great depression.

  8. I chose the picture "Radio Broadcast." As soon as i saw this picture i knew it was the best one. IN the picture it shows of men and women broadcasting a radio station and playing music. This shows that the people in the great depression had no entertainment other than music and radio broadcasting which really gave the people another thought in there head besides how the great depression will effect there lives.

  9. i chose the the picture of Karl Fortess: Island Dock Yard, 1934 i chose this piece of art because it is a picture of the city.what appeals to me is that the trains are going taking people everywhere and a lot is going on. the story that the piece tells is that everybody was busy during the great deppresion trying to find a way to make money. the effects the Great Deppresion had on the nation is that many people lost their job and a lot of money so many people were unhappy.

  10. I chose Paul Benjamin's "Cross Road -- Still Life". I chose this painting because I like the box like mailboxes and house. It is very empty. It tells that many farmers aren't there anymore, on the country side. It is very vacant. The effects the Great Depression had on our nation was that many people lost their jobs. People were going hungry and coulnd't pay most of their bills. This piecec shows how people could not afford that much anymore, by there being a vacant house and no one in this picture.

  12. I chose the picture "Skating in Central Park."
This picture caught my eye because its a very busy picture many things are happening and it made me stop and stare. This story tells about how entertainment can be simple. Even though the people in the picture where going through the great depression simple things that didn't cost money can bring great entertainment. The great depression put a lot of stress on people and caused a lot of loss of money so little things that where with friends or family could bring joy and entertainment to many people.

  14. I choose the image "subway". I choose this because when i first look at it, i look at the expressions on the peoples faces and what they are doing. Also it relates to today, becuase people are taking the subway more often, because gas is alot of money. The way it relates to the great dippression is back then when the great deppresion occured people couldnt afford to pay for gas and it was to cold to walk so they would all have to cram into a subway, inorder to get where needed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I chose the image of the empty highway. This appeals to me because in sent a message of how bad the Great Depression was. It showed that people couldn't even afford money for gas so therefore didnt even drive there cars and had to find other ways of transportation.

  16. I chose "baseball at night". This picture really popped out at me because I love watching Yankee games! I think its showing how people during The Great Depression used to have fun and what they would do in their spare time. Since The Great Depression was such a hard time for everyone at that point, baseball affected it greatly. It was a chance for people to go out and get their mind of things, like finances.

  17. I chose Paul Keple's (Machinery Abstract #2). I enjoy this picture because of everything that seems to be going on, there are gears everywhere and it seems as if the man is controlling everything. I think this picture tells a story about Americans and how they had to take control and bring their country back to the way it should be, people living the way the dream of. This reflects the great depression because everyone was working in the factories. I think the people working symbolize the restoring of our country, and the factory symbolizes the work force because that is where many worked during the depression.

  18. I chose the snow shovelers, because it showed how hard they worked during the great depression. The story tells about a group of men fighting in the cold weather to remove the snow from the path so people can walk on it. Like these people, i didn't even want to shovel the snow off my driveway, but we did for our family, like the workers in that painting. They didn't want to shovel out the path, but their families were poor and needed money. And the whole picture could just describe how working during the great depression was with the bad working conditions and the hard labor of doing your job was, even for minimum wage.

  19. I chose the "Manhattan Skyline" because it shows a contrast of the big city and its outskirts. The thing that appeals to me the most is the Empire State Build ing because it was one of the positives during the depression. It was built in record time and gave many New Yorkers a job. It tells the story of how the big city flourished more than the homeless on its outskirts. The depression brought many good and bad things. Among its worst are the gangsters of Chicago Al Capone and John Dillinger just to name a few. There was the dustbowl and the hoovervilles. Then there were the icons like the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge. Famous people included Franklin Delano Roosevelt who would later lead us through the second world war. All of these major icons provided many jobs to many americans during one of our nation's darkest hours.

  20. I chose the baseball picture because i think it's a pretty picture and well painted. I also liked it becasue it reminds me of how much fun it is to play a sport under the lights. I this picture tells about a bunch of grown just out and playing a fun game of baseball to get their minds off of all they are going the great depression.

  21. I chose the peice Waterfront Scene by Pino Janni. I chose this pecie because it tells me alot about the live of working men in 1934. This painting tells the story of two men that have fallen upon hard times and have been forced to find work at the local docks. The artist used very dull colors and gave the men very soemn facial expressions. This shows that many people faced challanges in 1934.

  22. i choose the picture of a town with only a women and child walking. This painting appealed to me because i like the colors and lighting. Its a well drawn piece and i like it. i believe this shows that the economy is not doing well not many people are out. it also show stores are not getting much business which means less jobs. This relates to the great depression because it helps you get a good idea of what it may have been like in 1934.

  24. I chose the picture of the woman, the 3 men and the little girl playing instruments. I choose this piece because it showed what people did as entertainment in the 1930's and because the kind of instruments they were playing looked interesting. This piece tells you that many people struggled through the Great Depression. People struggled finically and emotionally. They went to music to get their minds off reality. It gives you an a idea of what life was like in the 1930's.

  25. I chose the picture of the Negroes picking cotton. I like this piece of art because it shows what kind of jobs people had during the Great depression. This story shows that Negroes didn’t get a lot of respect. Blacks were treated as slaves… They were chosen to pick cotton out of the plant so it would give them something to do. This piece shows how this effected the Great depression because it shows the ruled and regulations of what people had to/on their own acted like. It shows one of the jobs that slaves had to do..

  26. I chose the picture with the little girl sitting in a chair holding a teddy bear because it reminded me of what I used to do when I was younger and scared. It appeals to me because it shows how hard it was a people during the Great Depression. The story the picture tells us is that during the Great Depression families had to work a lot more to get money just so that they could put food on the table for their families. The look on the little girls face makes me think that maybe her family did not have a lot of money and she was hungry because her parents could not afford to put food on the table. This picture makes me realize that even though some people were hurt by the Great Depression but were still able to put food on the table unlike some families who had a much harder time putting food on the table. Both parents and kids if the family owned a farm had to work long hours for food. Other people had to be migrant works because there were so many people that needed jobs. Even though the depression hurt adults, I believe it hurt the kids more because they were hungry and their parents had to work a lot more than if there was no depression.

  27. I choose the picture titled "Third Avenue' by Charles L. Goeller. The painting appealed to me because when I saw the small number of people on the streets and the newspaper tumbling it made me automatically think of the Great Depression. I think that there aren’t many people on the streets because they don’t have money to buy anything from the stores on the streets. People had such a limited amount of money, that a lot of them could hardly afford food. I think this painting is a great example of that. If you look to the right you can see that there is a market, but it looks like nobody is in there or that they might be closed due to lack of business. It shows the impact the great depression had on the nation. Usually the streets are packed with busy people and they are buying things. Here in this painting you see the streets are almost empty and nobody really has anywhere they have to be or go. I think it’s a really is a good example of how the shortage of money changed the nation then.

  28. I chose the picture of the baseball field. I chose this picture because i think that this shows the better times during the great depresion. This was the place where people could go to get there mind off what was going on and just have a good time. The part that appeals to me is that i like sports and this was fun for people in the great depression. The story that this piece tells is that people are having a good time, just relaxing and enjoying themselves. This picture is showing more of the better times during the great depression where as some of the other pictures show the hard times during the great depression.

  29. I choose the picture of the people playing baseball called "Baseball at Night" by Morris Kantor. This piece of art appeals to me because it shows how people don’t need much to have fun. For example in base ball you need a ball, bat, and a mitt. The story of this piece of art is that even during times like the great depression when you barley have anything there still are ways to have fun and release stress.

  30. I chose the picture of The tenement flats because it shows how people lived during the hard times. Also it shows how people would do there everyday chores and how they lived life. I also chose this because it shows how many people would live in such a little area. i also thought this picture related to the great depression because the people had no money so they had no choice in to live in these small tenements. it was hard because they had really nothing at all to keep them cool in the warmer seasons or warm during the colder season. it seemed hard for people to live there.

  31. I chose the picture of the old lady in the chair. This picture caught my eye out of all of the pictures because it represents a lot about what was going on throughout the great depression. In the picture of the lady, she is sewing and you can tell that her face looks very sad, like most people during that time. She probably could not afford to eat anything during that. overall the great depression had a big, and negative impact.

  32. I chose the piece of art "Baseball at Night" by Morris Kantor because it is America's pastime and it portrays a form of entertainment that people looked up to during times of trouble which was sports. This art piece reflects how many people and fans would push out for a sporting event just to keep their morale level up and balanced. Sporting events such as baseball games were also used as social events by families so they can converse with fellow citizens about recent news and current events. Baseball kept fans and athletes going even thought they knew the many days ahead of them weren't going to be the best.

  33. I chose the piece called paper workers. It chose this piece because the color and formation of there body’s shows you how they feel. This piece tells u that in this time people were not happy, hey dint want to go to work. All they wanted was to make money and be happy again .at this time period a lot of people lost their money do to the crash of the stock market. People became sad and lost hope of regaining what they. It was called the Great Depression. People lost all there money and became hopeless. People that were let go from there old jobs now had to go town to town looking for a job to support them or there family’s. Ever little thing counted then. This is like in our book OF MICE OF MEN, George and lennie don’t have a lot of money so they move town to town, farm to farm looking for a job to make money.

  34. I chose the piece by Carl Redin, at madrid coal mine in New Mexico. This piece really stuck out to me because of the colors. The great depression produced a sense of depression within itself. The colors used by Redin expressed the dismal, gloomy days. The great depression was a awful time for most people, which i think is represented exceptionally in Redins artwork.

  35. I chose the picture with the baseball field because it shows how people during the great depression spent their time without thinking about the stress. the part that is most appealing to me is that i am a sports fanatic and i love almost all sports. I also think that sports make life less stressful witch was key during the great depression. it took peoples minds off of the stressful depression and into the fun and exciting games.

  36. During the New Deal for artists, the artists made many paintings. E. Martin Hemmings painting – “Homeward Bound” shows a scene that could be from The Great Depression. It depicts a scene similar to what we are reading about in “Of Mice and Men,” two people are walking from farm to farm possibly looking for work. Most of the paintings look as thought they did not show The Great Depression. In fact I think there is only one that really qualifies and that is “Homeward Bound” by Martin Hennings. The reason that I think this are that all the other paintings show scenes of people working or living, the only way they could show The Great Depression is the lack of business. This painting reminds us of the number of homeless people there were around and the lack of hope. It also shows how desperate these people are because they don’t have coats even though there is snow and they have no provisions for their journey.

  37. I chose the picture of the River Front in 1934.
I chose this piece of art because it stuck out to me the most. It shows workers working in the snow just for money. I think the story kind of tells that people back then really would do anything and work alot in any condition because they needed money that badly! this picture reflects on the 1934's because during the great depression, money, and work was really a problem.
and alot of people faught over jobs, and money was hard to find. But the people had to do, what they had to do, to support themselfs and their families threw this hard time.

  38. I chose the picture of the young girl with her stuffed animal. I chose this picture because through picture you could see that she was not smiling and she did not look happy. People in the Great Depression were normally sad because they had no money and little food. This time period will never be forgotten for its negative impact on our society.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I choose the second to last piece. The Underpass- Binghamton. I choose this piece because although it has nothing in it at all it says so much more. All the picture is is the underpass in the middle of the night with the streetlights blazing bright. If one was to look at this picture they would think nothing of it, its just a blank picture nothing going on theres no point, but the reason I like it is because if you look farther into the picture it has a significant meening so much more than what it appears to be. The story to this piece tells is, newly built underpass's were designed to safely route cars under the train tracks in Binghamton, New York. In the 1930s sevral underpasse's were upgraded to provide jobs to those who were unemployed. Thus provideing money and a for some everything they and they're family needed to survive. So in all this picture to some might not seem like much but in reality, for others it was a life style, a way of liveing.

  40. i think that the second painting about the man is the most interesting. i think that it is effective because it shows the emotionality of poeple in that time and when you look at this man you can see that he has something on his mind thats bothering him. which really shows or represents the stress of the time, lifestyle, and thoughts. so that how this is a good effection from the great depression.

  41. I chose the picture "filling the ice house". I chose this picture becuase it stood out to me more then the rest of them. It made more sense to me to look at. It appeals to me because I understand what is happening in the picture. The story that this piece tells is men working in the freezing cold to fill icehouses. This shows how people would do anything to have work during this hard time. Jobs were very hard to find and people would take any opportunity they could get to work.

  42. I chose the painting titled “Gold is Where You Find it” by Tyrone Comfort. What appealed to me about this painting was that the man in the painting was working very hard and he was doing something that he probably didn’t want to do, but he had to make money during the Great Depression. This piece shows that during the Great Depression, people very often didn’t do what they really wanted to do in their life, and had to do things they hated because they needed to make a living to get any money possible to help their families eat and get the essentials to life. This piece came during a hard time in American history. During the Great Depression people usually weren’t happy, even if they could and were making a living. There was extreme poverty and America has never been in worse turmoil then when they were in the Great Depression.

  43. I chose the picture of the mountain and the little town. It shows that there is still happiness not saddness in the country and that there is still hope. It is a nice happy picture not a sad one and gives hope to those affected by the depression

  44. I chose gold is where you find it because it shows that times were tough and not many people had money during the great depression. Lots of people suffered and he’s trying to dig for gold and save himself from the depression. This piece tells that during the great depression people had to do odd jobs that they usually don’t do and aren’t used to doing. The great depression hit America with great force and no one saw it coming. - GRANT NOVO

  45. I choose the picture of the little girl sitting in her chair with he stuffed toy. I liked this picture becaue of the deeper meaning it held with ithe big picture. When you really look in her eyes you can see how sad she was and how the great depression truly effected every one back then. Children back then might not of understood the real concept of what the great depression meant, but they understood their life of confort was no longer an option. I also choose this piecebecause it tells he viewer the the great depression not only hit the men and women who lost their jobs, but everyone nation wide as well.
