BLOG ASSIGNMENT:
Identify a theme in one of Odysseus' adventures. Describe the scene and how we see this theme emerge. Please keep your post unique. 200 WORDS.
DUE: 12/4
The theme of the Sirens is desire-control. The Sirens lure sailors to their deaths by sing sweetly. Odysseus got a warning about this from Circe, he was prepared. To keep his men from getting them all killed by the sirens, he filled his men's ears with beeswax to deafen them. Then he had himself tied to the mast to insure that when they were away from the Sirens that his men don't continue to go until they crash. The Sirens lure men to their deaths by singing because their voices are irresistible. It seems like the men in this story can not control their desire for women with American Idol worthy voices. In order to pass the Sirens, with out being dragged down to your death, is to control your desire for it. The more you want, the less control you have over yourself. Though at one point, Odysseus lost control over his desire, he did make it through without dieing. To detach his men from this desire would have been impossible, seeing how they can't control their curiosity or follow a simple order not to kill anyone in a little village, deafening them was the alternative. Odysseus, being the one who is home sick, was the better choice of guiding the ship to safety.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus is brave throughout the whole entire story. However he was the most brave when he lead the ship past Scylla and the whirlpool. He was brave because he knew that he would lose six men, possibly himself, and he still kept going. If he hadn't learned that they were going to pass these obstacles from Circe then it might have been worse. This also shows that he was determined to reach Ithaca after a 20 year journey.
ReplyDeleteIn the story The Odyssey there are many themes that give us clues to Greek values and beliefs. There is one of them though that stands out above all the rest which is - pride leads to disaster. The most prominent show of this fact is during the Cyclops scene where up until this point Odysseus has done quite well considering the situation that confronts him (one would call being stuck in a cave with a huge monster wanting to eat you and everyone around you a bad situation) and although half of those who go with him are killed (better then everyone though) he’s eluded the Cyclops and has gotten away with a lot of the flock; he’s completely home free. But what does he go and do? He taunts the beast telling him that he, Odysseus king of Ithaca, is the one who has blinded him. Now Odysseus knows that he shouldn’t let the Cyclops find out what his name is (why else would he tell him that his name is nobody unless he didn’t want the Cyclops to know his real name) because the Cyclops would be able to curse him, so Odysseus has effectively committed suicide. Now in reading the rest of the story the Cyclops does curse him (of course) and slowly all of his ships are destroyed and of his all men killed. The trip back to Ithaca would have been no where near as problematic if Odysseus had just kept his mouth shut and not given into pride.
ReplyDeleteThe theme I chose is cleverness. Odysseus is extremely cleaver when he straps the people under the rams to escape. What Odysseus does is he ties three rams together and straps one person underneath the middle ram. The people escape because the Cyclops would only feel the two outside rams to see if anyone was trying to escape and never thought of checking the middle ram. “the master stroked each ram, then let it pass, but my men riding on the pectoral fleece the giant’s blind hands blundering never found.” (Page 455) Odysseus thought long and hard to realize that this was the way he could successfully escape. Odysseus uses his cleverness to outsmart the Cyclops and keep all his men safe. This shows how clever Odysseus is.
ReplyDeleteIn Odysseus’s adventures threw Cyclops cave he came along many challenges. Some good, some bad. Odysseus was very brave and clever to do some of the things he did. By gathering up all his men and telling them when to attack Cyclops. He was strong by not giving up on someone more then twice his size. Another theme to Odysseus’s adventure was that he was smart throughout the hole thing. Odysseus and his men were proactive by making sure the sheep were outside the cave so they could quickly hop on the ship back home. They were smart by stabbing him in the eye and making him suffer, because he only had one eye. Also they waited till Cyclops was completely drunk and passed out because they knew he wasn’t going to have a clue, what was going on when he woke up.
ReplyDeleteEspecially for the fact that Odysseus lied to the Cyclops when he asked “tell me, how are you called?” and Odysseus said “you ask for my honorable name? Remember the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. My name is nohbody: mother, father, and friends, call me nohbody.” Page 452 of the Odyssey
In Odysseus's adventure in Part 1, one main theme was cleverness. When Odysseus and his men got to the land of the Cyclops, the Cyclops was going to keep them captured in his cave forever. Odysseus thought of a clever idea on how to escape. He gave the Cyclops wine so he got drunk and fell asleep. He took a stick and Odysseus and his men held onto it and stabbed it into the Cyclops eye. They did this so he couldn't see them escape. When the Cyclops let out the sheep to run around the land, Odysseus and his men tied themselves to the bottom of the sheep, and when they got out of the cave, they untied themselves and ran to their ship. Odysseus was clever in this because his plan to escape was clever.
ReplyDeleteI chose Domination as my theme for the Lotus Eaters part in part one of the story. When Odysseus and his men reach the land of the lotus eaters he specifically tells his men "No one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home."(Pg.445) The couple of men being very ignorant goes inland and finds the lotus eaters, then eats the lotus and all of them start to be really relaxed and careless. After Odysseus had found out that they had eaten the flower he punishes them by tieing all 3 of them under there row bench and called the rest of his crew as they went on for there journey. This shows how much Odysseus was dominated by his men and how it made him look like a very weak and unaware leader.
ReplyDeleteIn Part 1 of The Odyssey, after Odysseus and his men were blown off coarse, they decided to make a stop at an island, not knowing who or what inhabits the island. Odysseus sent a couple of men onto the island to see who lives there. After a while, the men didn't return, so Odysseus went onto the island to see where they were. He found them in a diluted state, carefree and not wanting to return home, after eating the lotus. The men and the other lotus eaters told Odysseus to join them. But Odysseus refused and told his men to go back to the ship. And when his men refused to go back, Odysseus dragged them, kicking and screaming, back to the ship. The theme that best represents this scene is self- restraint and leadership. Since Odysseus had the desire to return home, he restrained himself from eating the lotus, which makes you not want to return home. He also showed leadership when he dragged his men back to the ship, even when they refused and were kicking and screaming. So, leadership and self- restraint best describes this scene.

ReplyDeleteOdysseus shows cleverness when he and one of his men were trapped with the Cyclops. The Cyclops asked Odysseus what his name was and he said his name was Nobody. Odysseus decides to give the Cyclops something so he would get drunk and pass out. When the Cyclpos passed out Odysseus stabbed a stick through his eye. The Cyclops woke up screaming in pain. He tryed to look for the two men with his hands but he couldn't find them because he couldn't see. A group of men heard the Cyclops screaming so they rushed over and asked him what was wrong. The Cyclops said "Nobody's tricked me! Nobody's bothered me!". The men thought nobody bothered the Cyclops, but the Cyclops thought Odysseus name was Nobody so when he was telling the men Nobody was bothering him they just walked away. This shows how clever Odysseus can be.
ReplyDeleteThere are many themes in The Odyssey. The theme I chose to discuss is revenge. Revenge is a clear theme shown in the story of Against the Suitors. In this story, Odysseus is very angry with the men that plundered his house and vied for his wife. He shoots an arrow and kills Antinous. He screams angry words at the suitors and tells them that he is going to murder them. “Your last hour has come. You die in blood” (pg 481). In an effort not to be killed, the suitors try to blame Antinous for forcing them to do the disrespectful things they did. Odysseus will not listen to their excuses. He tells them “There will be killing till the score is paid” (page 482). This is a classic example of revenge. Revenge is defined as inflicting punishment for a wrong. This is illustrated in this story because Odysseus wants to even the score and punish the suitors for violating his home and desiring his wife. Odysseus tells the nurse that “they respected no one, good or bad, … for this … a bad end befell them” (Page 483).
ReplyDeleteOne theme in The Odyssey is making quick decisions. Throughout the book, Odysseus is never caught by surprise by anything that happens. Odysseus always made the right decision. For example, when Odysseus is faced with a choice of Scylla or Charybdis, he is forced to make a tough decision. He could either go to Scylla, the 6-headed dragon, who will eat exactly 6 of his men, or to Charybdis, who is a whirlpool that would kill them all. Odysseus decides to go to Scylla. The normal ship leader usually alerts his men of all his decisions, but not Odysseus. He realizes that if he were to tell his men of Scylla, they would turn around and try and go back and die from Charybdis. His men wouldn’t understand that they couldn’t turn back. So Odysseus doesn’t tell his men of his decision, and they keep moving and get to Scylla. Six of his men were eaten, but they could still move on after that. Decisions like these are the decisions that will make-or-break a journey. Odysseus had the power to make the correct decision, and not over-react or tell his men like a typical leader. He took matters into his own hands, and did what was right, not what his men wanted to do.

One theme in the Odyssey is determination. This theme is shown numerous times in the epic. Odysseus has the loyalty from his men to get them to do anything he says. When they are stuck in the cyclops' cave Odysseus tells his men to sharpen and harden the olive tree to stab the cyclops eye out the men are going to do anything to get out of the cave. Odysseus is determined to get past Scylla and Charybdis so he takes he path to bring him to scylla. He knew only six of his men would be eaten and he could continue on after that.Even the god Zeus helps Odysseus get past scylla by blinding it until he passes.
ReplyDeleteIn The Odyssey Part 1, Odysseus and his men are heading towards Scylla and Charybdis. Odysseus and his men couldn't get past either of them without at least six of his men dying. But he could pass one and not the other. However, Circe, the one who kept Odysseus on her island for one year, warned Odysseus ahead of time. And was able to tell Odysseus what to do. "Circe suggested to Odysseus that he and his men should avoid Charybdis and risk a smaller loss of six men to Scylla."(Page 462) So when he was about to face Scylla, Odysseus knew to face Scylla, but if he were to tell his men that six of them were to die, they would steer towards Charybdis as a cause of panic since they all did not want to be one of the six people to die to Scylla. So Odysseus does not tell anyone that six people would die, and the men faced Scylla, and six of his men died instead of everyone on the ship. So a moral to describe one of Odysseus clever actions in this scene is that sometimes it is best to keep your mouth shut sometimes.
ReplyDeleteOne theme in the Odyssey is determination. Odysseus exerts determination when they are on the island of the Lotus Eaters. Odysseus tells his men not to eat the Lotus plant and if they do it will make them lose their hope of home. When some of Odysseus’s men decide to be disobedient, they go inland and eat the lotus. When Odysseus see this he could have just eaten the plant to and relaxed and stayed on the island too but he was determined to go back home to Ithaca so he drags his men and ties them to the boat so that they cannot escape and continues on his journey. This shows determination because Odysseus could have just decided to give in to the lotus instead of going back home to Ithaca but he was so determined to get back home that he does whatever he can to make sure that his men and him can continue on in their journey home.

One theme is that Bragging brings nothing but consequences. This moral is shown in the story of the Cyclops. After Odysseus conspires his devious plan to escape the Cyclops, he tells the crude beast that his name is Nohbody. So after he puts his plan to work and the Cyclops Screams in agony that "nohbody's ruined me.." Odysseus feels the need to release his true identity to the Cyclops. Once he brags saying "If ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye:Laerthes' a few back to whoes home's on Ithica." The Cyclops now knowing who had tricked him, told his father Posiden to curse the man that had ruined him with a 5 part curse, proving the theme to be correct.

I think that Odysseus is risky. In the part where he had to choose between loosing 6 men or loosing the whole ship he chose only to loose 6 men which was a giant risk. He could have lost more than six men and then his plan of going home in one piece would have failed. If Odysseus did not make the right choice he would have never made it back to his home town of Ithaca, and before his wife Penelope can be re-married to one of the many suitors that have taken over his kingdom. Odysseus also took the risk of slaughtering all the suitors that had taken over his kingdom. Odysseus was disguised as an old beggar so no one would know that he was back in Ithaca. Then at the right moment he came out of being disguised and killed the head suitor then all the rest. He had no mercy on anyone and even killed the maids. Had he came out of being disguised at the wrong moment then he himself could have been killed. He was disguised to save his kingdom his wife and his son. His son was going to be killed by the suitors because he was next in line to be king.

ReplyDeleteRevenge, is a theme that is expressed multiple times in The Odyssey. Revenge is expressed in the first part of The Odyssey, when Odysseus escapes the Cyclopes cave and mocks him as he sails of, and as he leaves the Cyclopes casts his revenge on Odysseus by asking his father the god of earthquakes, and the others to curse Odysseus and have him a long and hard journey back home. Revenge is also shown in the second part of The Odyssey, when Odysseus returns home to find that the suitors are forcing his wife, Penelope, to take another husband. After Odysseus wins the challenge Penelope set for the suitors Odysseus takes his revenge by killing the head suitor, Antious, and then killing all the men and women involved in his wife’s enforcement to take on a new husband. Revenge is a common theme in both parts of The Odyssey.
ReplyDeleteOne interesting theme in the Odyssey is leadership and preparation. This is demonstrated in the episode of the Sirens. Odysseus knows the dangers of these harmful mermaids. They lure in sailors with there great singing voices that can be heard for miles and then once they're reeled in they kill them. Since Odysseus is aware of this he demonstrates his outstanding leadership. He has his crew fully prepared and they end up avoiding the Sirens.
ReplyDeleteThrough out the story of the Cyclops, one of the stronger themes that stood out to me was how clever Odysseus was. I thought when Odysseus was trapped in the cave knowing that he could not move the object in the entrance/exit of the cave he was very clever in his escape. First he had to distract the Cyclops and get him drunk. In the beginning Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy. Then he stabbed him in his only eye to blind him. When the Cyclops called for help he said that Nohbdy did this to me and Nohbdy hurt me. This is another aspect of his cleverness so that he could not be identified. He tied himself and all of his men that were trapped inside the cave to rams to escape. His plan was to tie each man to a set of three rams. The men would be under the middle ram so when the Cyclops went to feel around for the men they were nowhere to be found. I found this very clever of Odysseus and that is why I chose this theme for this section of the story.

In the near end of part 1 of The Odyssey, the remaining men and Odysseus came upon the two monsters, Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is a six-headed monster that can only eat six men at a time and Charybdis is a whirlpool that can swallow an entire ship. Now Odysseus knew the dangers of going in their path because Circe told him, but fortunately, the crew didn’t know. This is a good thing because then the men would have turned around and not followed Odysseus’s orders even though he was their leader on the trip. Since he knew that Scylla could only eat six men at a time, it was best to head towards her instead of endangering his and his men’s lives. So, he avoided Charybdis and went towards Scylla and ended up loosing all of his men, which were 6. While Scylla was eating his men, Odysseus rowed on. I think that this scene of The Odyssey represents the theme of braveness and trepidation. I think that these are the best because he was scared like anyone would be to take on a six-headed monster while risking his life, but he did it and he managed to get home safely and alive even with no men left.
ReplyDeleteThe theme ofThe Return to Ithaca is intuitiveness. Odysseus returns to his own palace in disguise as an old man to get his wife, son and castle back from the suitors. He finds that suiters are invading his castle and making his wife, Penelope, remarry. Odysseus shows intuitiveness because he thinks to hide all the weapons from the suitors. When he completes the challenge, with the help of Zeus, of stringing his bow and shooting an arrow through 12 socket holes in axe-heads without grazing a single one. His thought to hide all the weapons was clever because he was able to kill and defeat all the invading lords and suitors. Odysseus saved himself, Penelope and his son because none of them got hurt. Another character that showed intuitiveness was Penelope on multiple accounts. She was able to stall time by saying she had to finish threading her shroud, and working on it all day. But at night she would unweave all that she did that day. When one of her servants caught her undoing all her work, the servant told the Suitors and lords and they told her that she was not aloud to weave it anymore and that she had to choose a new husband asap. Penelope then thought of a plan. She found Odysseus’s old bow and arrow that no one else could string and told the men that the one man that can string his bow and shoot it throw 12 holes would be her new husband. This was clever because only Odysseus would be able to do it. One more time that Penelope was intuitive was when she tested Odysseus to see if it was really her husband. She told her nurse to drag there bed out into the hall for him to sleep on. She knew this would be an impossible task because one bed post was an olive tree and the rest built to match. Odysseus was outraged because he thought she had wrecked the bed he had made for them and she was able to know it was him because the only people that know what there bed was made around was Odysseus, Penelope, their son Telemachus and their nurse maid.
ReplyDeleteIn The Odyssey part 1, one theme that is presented is listening. When odysseus stops on the island of Thrinacia, island of Helios he told his crew not to eat any of Helios prized cattle. Odysseus was warned by Circe and Tiresias about the danger of eating Helios prized cattle. After Odysseus comes back from pray to Helios he find out that his crew has killed and eaten the cattle. Since Odysseus had listened to Circe and Tiresias he didn't eat any cattle and when he runs into Scylla and charybdis for a second time zeus helps odyssues out and makes it so Scylla dosen't look at Odysseus therefore Odysseus dosen't get eaten. This shows the theme of listening because if Odysseus didn't lsiten to not eat Helios cattle then he would be dead.
ReplyDeleteI believe there are many themes in this story. However, the one theme that sticks out to me is determination. The definition of determination in my mind is someone's ability to strive for something. Wether this goal is achievable or unachievable, if your determined you will never look back. Odysseus expresses his determination to win his wife Penelope back. Odysseus has been gone for 10 years. Odysseus was assured that his wife Penelope has stayed faithful. Before returning home Odysseus is disguised as a old beggar. Penelope doesn't want to re-marry but her parents are encouraging her to. Penelope's parents believe that Odysseus wont return. Antinous is a jerk but he is the head suitor and the most likely candidate for penelope. There is one scene in my mind that really sticks out. Odysseus realizes that all of the suitors are jerks. He also realizes that they are all trying to steal his wife. Odysseus alongside with his son Telmachdus kill everyone of the suitors. They were outnumbered 10 to 1 but Odysseus determination was far to great for any suitor to take. After killing all of the suitors Penelope realizes the old beggar is Odysseus and is relieved he is not gone. All the steps Odysseus took over the course of 10 years were to get back to Penelope and his son Telmachdus. All was well in Ithaca.
ReplyDeleteThe theme I chose is deception. I felt like there was a lot of deceiving going on in the scene where Penelope wants to stall in hopes that Odysseus would come back during that time. One way Penelope stalls is by weaving her blanket that she must finish before she can get married. At night when no one is around, she unweaves it so it takes longer to finish. She was soon caught and those plans would no longer work. She came up with an idea of a competition to see whom she is really destined to marry. The competition was to see who could bend Odysseus’ bow. Everyone had tried but Penelope knew only Odysseus could do it. This old beggar asks for a try but this old beggar was Odysseus disguised as a beggar. Moreover, when he did it perfectly and shot the bow through the axe heads Penelope put out to shoot through he shoots it perfectly with help from Zeus. Suddenly Odysseus sheds his disguise and kills all the suitors and everyone but the children. That is one theme that I thought best fitted the scene of Odysseus’ return.
ReplyDelete---Thomas Marchese---
In The Odyssey, Part 1, the theme that I chose is valor. When Odysseus and his men encountered Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus showed lots of courage while dealing with these two monsters. He knew that he had to face Scylla first, as Circe told him. But Odysseus did not hesitate. He and his men rowed thier boat towards Scylla. As Circe told him, Scylla whisked six of Odysseus' men from the boat. Odysseus was nervous at first, but moved on. Next was Charybdis, a monster that created whirlpools. Odysseus knew that Charybdis was dangerous, and he told his crew this. When he got to Charybdis, the monster began to drink the boat. Odysseus sprang for a fig tree and escaped the dreadful monster. (page 466) Odysseus, after his terrifying journey, showed much valor when passing Scylla and Charybdis. This shows that the best thing to get rid of your fears, is to face them and be brave, like Odysseus did!
ReplyDeleteDuring the story of Sirens, Odysseus and his crew see their homeland of Ithaca. Odysseus was given a bag of wind from Aeolus to help get home sooner. Odysseus hid the bag of wind from his crew. The crew found the bag. After seeing their homeland from a distance, the crew opens the bag of wind and they got pushed away from home. Odysseus takes a quick stop at Aeaea, where he is warned of the dangers that lie ahead of them. Odysseus says that the Sirens will lure them to shore so Odysseus tells his crew to tie him to the front of the ship and if he screams to get out and tighten the ropes. He told his men to put bees wax in their ears so they can't hear the Sirens singing. They get through the trap safely. The theme to the story Sirens is to do what you are told because even though the crew thought it was the wrong thing to do, they did it and came through the trap safely. Because they listened to Odysseus, and didn't take the beeswax out or untie Odysseus, they continued their travel on their way back to Ithaca.

ReplyDeleteare many themes in the epic poem of the odyssey. One of them more than
others. I think that a main theme for the Odyssey is true love. There
is no way that Odyseous could have made it 20 years without giving up
if he wasn't waiting to reunite with Penelope. Even when Odyseus was
captured by a beautiful goddess a could have stayed with her beauty
forever he was still loyal to Ponelope. Determination kind of goes hand
and hand with true love because Odyseus's love drives him home. Just
when Odysseus is about to give up and lose all help he is saved by the
ghost of his mother. She tells him that penelope is still waiting for
him and he continues with his journey. The same goes for penelope. Its
has been 20 whole years of waiting and with someone of her stature she
should of already married and began ruling again. But wither her wit
and love for Odysseus she waits in hope of his return and some how
knows in her heart that he will.

ReplyDeleteDuring the story of The Odyessy, the theme of courage is shown many times. During the part with the cyclops, Odysseus and his men needed a lot of courage to take down and escape from the cyclops. Another part of the story where Odysseus shows courage is when Odysseus and his men face Scylla and Charibdus. Odysses needed this courage because he knew he wouldn't be able to defeat the beasts. So he had to let Scylla eat 6 of his men so he can get past them. Another part was when Odysseus arrives at the island of the lotus eaters and sends out some of his men to explore the island and find out who or what lives there. But when Odysseus realizes that his men have been gone for a while, he finds out they were hipnotized by the special flowers that grow there. Odysseus needed his courage to say no to these flowers and bring his men back to the ship. One other time was when Odysseus has lost all of his men and he his alone. When trying to get back home, he encounters Scylla and Charibdus again. Odysseus has no idea what to do, but then thinks to try to slip past Scylla when it's not looking. This had to take a lot of courage.

ReplyDeleteIn the Odyssey one theme that is show through the book is decision making. Odysseus shows this theme when he is passing by, Scylla a six headed monster and Charybdis a deadly woo pool. He knew from Circe that if he decided to go pass the Scylla that he would lose six of his men and if he decided to go past Charybdis that his entire ship would be sucked down and destroyed. He had to make a decision in this situation weather he would rather lose his whole ship and crew or just six of his men. He also decides not to tell his men of the monsters in fear that they will stop rowing the ship. Another time when Odysseus has to make a tough decision is when he has to decide what to do when the god of the ocean was singing the wonderful song and he decided to put wax in all of their ears so they couldn’t hear, and that is how decision making is proven true.
ReplyDeleteoooo bummer ur late ooooo
ReplyDeleteOdysseus is wise and brave because when he was planning on attacking the suitors he told telamachus to move the armor and weapons so that the suitors couldnt fight back which proves that he is wise and he takes all the suitors on just him and telamachus and kills them all shows his bravery. Another theme that is shown throughout the whole odyssey is that he is determined to get home. He never gave up even when he was faced with the most treacherous of things. He succeeded in getting passed them to get home to Penelope.
ReplyDeleteThemes in the odyssey which aren’t presented a lot, but still are important is belief and faith. When Odysseus' wife Penelope was being forced to choose a new husband since Odysseus was gone. She never chose a new husband but everyone was telling her she had to, even her own son Telemachus. Although she had believed and had faith in Odysseus that he would come back one day. So she stalled the process as long a she could. Since Penelope had to prepare a shroud for Odysseus' family she made it seem like it was taking her awhile to make it. She did that by each night she would unravel the shroud and make it seem like she had only progressed a little bit each day, showing how she had faith Odysseus would come back home, Which he did in the end. These themes aren’t used often in the odyssey but are equally as important as the rest

ReplyDeleteThe theme of The Odyssey is loyalty. In the story The Odyssey Odysseus’s wife Penelope stays loyal to her husband and does not remarry. Penelope is so loyal that when suitors come to marry her she tricks them. The suitors drank and eat all her food they took over the palace. Instead of Penelope giving in to one and ending the troubles of the palace she tricked them. Penelope says that she most do one more thing for Odysseus’s family before she moves on. She says she must make a cloth to go over her father-in-laws tomb. For about two years she weaves during the day and unweaves what she had weaved that day during the night. One night Penelope’s maid caught her in the act and ran to tell the suitors. She was then forced to finish the cloth. After that the suitors were forcing Penelope to choose a husband she then came up with a impossible task for the suitors to do and however could do it would be her husband. The trick was no one could do it but her husband Odysseus. Her task was to string his bow and shoot it through many holes. Penelope’s loyalty helped Odysseus come home, it encouraged him knowing he had something to come home to. When he was with Circe he saw his mother, she told him Penelope had been loyal to him this whole time. This inspired him to want to get home even more because he had been through so much that he was about to give up.

ReplyDeleteI think a theme that is expressed throughout the entire poem would be determination. The main character that shows this was Odysseus. He shows this because throughout the whole story Odysseus encountered tons of life threating obstacles but never gave up and used cleverness to overcome all his obstacles to get to Ithica. An example would be when Odysseus and his men got stuck in the Cyclops's cave. Even after watching the Cyclops eat some of his men Odysseus never gave up and was determined to get out. Eventually he comes up with a plan and escapes. Another example was when Scylla and Charibdis were destroying his ship and killed all his men but even when all hope was almost lost Odysseus was completly determined to survive and he did. There were many themes in The Odyssey including cleverness, loyalty, being brave, but I definently think the biggest one was determination and it was showed throughout the entire poem.
